The school holidays are coming to an end and before you know it, it’ll be time to go back to school. If you want to help your child transition back to school so they feel comfortable and confident in their first week back, keep on reading.
5 Ways to Help Your Child Transition Back to School After School Holidays
Create Consistency with Daily Routines
Over the school holidays, it can often be a busy time for families. There are days where you’ll be visiting family members, going on playdates, and visiting local sights and events. This can create a lot of variation in your child’s daily routine like different wake up and bedtimes, and different eating times too. A simple way to help your child transition back to school after the school holidays is to slowly start introducing more consistency with daily routines. Having set wake up and bedtimes can be a good first step!
Practice Using a Lunch Box and Drink Bottle
If your little one has a new lunchbox for school this year, or this is their first time going to school, they might not be used to opening their lunchbox on their own. To get your little one comfortable and confident with this part of their school day, you might want to start putting lunch items in their lunchbox a week or so before starting school. That way your little one can get familiar with the lunchbox and get used to the foods they’ll be enjoying on their school breaks.
Bring the Excitement and Try on Their Uniform
If your little one has a new uniform or they’re just starting school, it’s a good idea to get them to try on their uniform and shoes a few days before they go back to make sure everything fits and they feel comfortable. You can also use this as an opportunity to practice doing up laces!
Read Books or Watch Movies About School Together
Depending on what you have available, you might like to introduce the idea of going to school to your little one by reading a book or watching a movie together. This is a great way to spark conversations about how your child may be feeling about going to school so that you can work through them together.
Start the Transition Sooner Rather Than Later
If you are thinking about ways to help your child transition back to school, one of the best tips we can give is to get started as soon as you can! Small changes to routines, or incorporating things like school lunchboxes can help your child to return to familiarity with their school return or (if they’re starting school) get used to new aspects of their routine.
